London Fire Brigade launches Fire Risk Guide for Landlords

London Fire Brigade have launched a new website offering information and guidance on fire safety for landlords and tenants. The website, called “Know the Plan” has video guides, frequently asked questions and downloads available. The website focuses particularly on blocks of flats but is useful for all landlords whatever type of rental property they have. Westminster Council is also calling on all landlords to check they are fulfilling their legal duties to protect their tenants from fire following their successful prosecution of a landlord after a fire at a flat on the Edgware Road.
Cllr Nickie Aiken of the Council says “Landlords have a legal and moral responsibility to do everything they can to protect their tenants from fire. This prosecution should serve as notice to others who risk people’s lives because they can’t be bothered to take their responsibilities seriously, or worse they want to save a few pounds.”
Daryll Stroud, the London Fire Brigade Borough Commander says “Landlords have a clear duty under the law to keep their tenants safe from fire. Many of them are fulfilling those duties but many need to step up and take their responsibilities more seriously. That’s why we have launched our “Know the Plan” campaign and website, which explains to landlords what their fire safety responsibilities are and keeps tenants living in purpose built blocks of flats up to date with crucial fire safety information.”
