RLA Chairman, Alan Ward, has written to the Director General seeking further clarification on plans announced in the March budget to allow private tenants to sub-let their tenancies. Mr Ward has raised questions as to how this would affect landlords with leases, licensing and mortgage conditions and why the proposal has been put forward without consultation. Paul Shamplina of Landlord Action says “If it goes ahead, it will throw up a magnitude of problems in the buy-to-let industry. We have never seen so many sub-letting cases go to court because of unscrupulous tenants trying to cream a profit from a property they have rented.” Mr Shamplina further said that it would be “catastrophic” for the rental market.
