Research by Direct Line for Business reveals that one in six tenants admit to sub-letting. 25% of them did not check their tenancy agreement to see if it was permitted and 34% had not informed their landlord. A quarter of those were subsequently found out. Of those, 11% were evicted with half of those losing their deposit. Other repercussions were landlords increasing the rent and issuing fines and/or a warning. Despite this 17% of tenants are thinking about advertising to sub-let on websites such as Airbnb.
