“This month marks the introduction of what is set to be one of the most punishing tax regimes in the western world” says Alan Ward, Chairman of the RLA (Residential Landlords Association). The changes to mortgage interest relief are being phased in between now and 2020. It will be several years before landlords feel the true impact.
This assault on the sector will see landlords taxed on turnover rather than profit and runs the real risk of forcing landlords out of the market and pushing rents sky high. This at a time when the Government needs the private rented sector more than ever.
Similar changes in Ireland were scrapped after a few years. This is proof, were it needed, that this tax will not work.
Sulgrave Estates has sent details to all landlords separately and would urge them not to give up the fight and to support the Axe the Tenant Tax campaign in whatever way they can.
