Government scraps the Green Deal

The Green Deal launched by the Government in 2013 has been scrapped and may be judged as a “total flop”. The take up was just £10,000 and there were concerns that people did not understand it or were not aware of it. An investigation has also been launched into scams by companies offering to carry out work with loans granted by the programme. Some of these installers have now been struck off for breaking the Deal’s Code of Conduct.

The Energy Secretary, Amber Rudd, said “We are on the side of hardworking families and businesses which is why we cannot continue to fund the Green Deal. It’s now time for the building industry and consumer groups to work with us to make new policy and build a system that works. Together we can achieve this Government’s ambition to make homes warmer and drive down bills for one million more homes by 2020.”

The Green Deal Home Improvement Fund has also lost its funding. This allowed households to claim back the cost of work carried out on their homes to improve energy efficiency.
