October deadline for smoke and carbon monoxide alarms
Posted on 01/08/2015 by Sulgrave Estates
Landlords have until October to ensure smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms are fitted in their rental properties or risk a £5,000 fine. Smoke alarms should be fitted on every floor. It is hoped the new law will prevent up to 26 deaths and 670 injuries each year. Housing Minister, Brandon Lewis, says “In 1988 just eight per cent of homes had a smoke alarm installed – now it’s over 90 per cent. The vast majority of landlords offer a good service and have installed smoke alarms in their homes, but I’m changing the law to ensure every tenant can be given this important protection.” Testing the alarms regularly will remain the responsibility of the tenant but it is the landlord’s responsibility to test them and ensure they are working at the start of each new tenancy.
