6,000 Deposit Cases withdrawn before Arbitration

More than 6,000 deposit disputes were filed with the three approved Deposit Schemes last year and then withdrawn.
This figure included situations where tenants had raised a dispute but the Deposit Scheme had been unable to contact them for further information, as well as cases where the parties had reached agreement before going to arbitration. Other reasons were where the case had gone to court instead or where one of the parties had not submitted their evidence within the required timeframe.
Housing Minister, Brandon Lewis, says “The upward trend in the number of cases withdrawn before adjudication is a result of the successful use of mediation services by the schemes before the formal adjudication process begins and the detailed guidance and advice provided to both landlords and tenants by the schemes to help avoid disputes.”
